Interview with Martin Leblanc Eigtved, Founder of IconFinder.net

So many design blogs and showcases today are giving away icons for free. Even in large sets, social media icons and small graphics are making their way into the big time. I’m a huge fan of collecting icons, and all of these free sites are extremely useful and always in my bookmarks.

IconFinder is a simple site with a simple premise: provide an easy-to-use icon search engine. Simply typing in keywords like “twitter” or “RSS feed” will bring up pages of icons, all free an available to download! I got a terrific interview with the site’s creator Martin Leblanc Eigtved, discussing the inner workings of Icon Finder.

New Digg-Clone Thuhm Updates Design and Added Features

I had written a Review for Thuhm a while back, and have to say I still love the app. It’s a brand new social news website for sharing all kinds of news, and it combines the best features of Reddit and Digg together.

Although still just breaking off the ground, Thuhm has a lot to offer it’s readers. Recently there had been a post mentioning new updates on the site, including a new front page design and the addition of categories.

CypherBox.net – Great Pligg-based PR4 Social Bookmarking Site

I just want to say, I absolutely love Pligg. It’s an amazing PHP script, free to download which allows you to set up your own social news site similar to Digg. Many micro-niche sites have popped up running on Pligg’s backend, and CypherBox is my latest find.

CypherBox is a Google PageRank 4, which is huge for social bookmarking sites. Not only that, but every link on the page is DoFollow – this means Google passes on PR4 juice to each link you submit! This can greatly impact a new website or blog if you know how to use this system right, and CypherBox is only growing.

Rumors of Yahoo! Taking Down MyBlogLog could be False

Starting around December I had seen a lot of blogs posting about Yahoo! considering closing the doors on MyBlogLog. I was sad to hear this news, as I have been a huge fan of MyBlogLog since it first launched in 2005. It was a simple community of bloggers with a simple goal of uniting the best writers and bloggers on the web.

In 2007 Yahoo! bought out the company for a cool $10 million, a swift deal if I do say so myself. MyBlogLog has only grown in popularity since then, closing in on hitting about 300,000 members and ranking with a solid PR7 and Alexa Rank of 1,344. News of Yahoo! closing the site was not only sad, but also very unorthodox: why shut down MyBlogLog when it’s still bringing in so many pageviews and visits daily?

Chill to your Music Library anywhere with Grooveshark

Ever since I found out about Grooveshark a few months ago, it’s revolutionized the way I listen to music. No longer am I stuck with my iTunes playlists and limitions on songs – nor do I even need to store the songs on my computer!

Grooveshark allows you to upload any and all mp3 files you have right to their database. You can also search for songs already uploaded and add them to your library. This allows you to share music through the internet with tons and tons of people, compiling a huge on-the-go music library.

The features in the web app are endless, creating playlists and favorites are just the start of it. Following the path of Pandora, Grooveshark also has the a Radio button which will add live music to your playlist based on what other songs you’re playing. Truly a magnificent application, I can say Grooveshark may be the next big web 2.0 hit for music fans.

Organize your Schedule Online with Plan.fm

So I found another cool app the other day. plan.fm, simple name with a simple purpose of uniting all of your plans in one place. You can draw in feeds from social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and merge your plans all into one calendar.

I’ve found this particularly useful to remember when I have to do things. I am very forgetful – people’s birthdays, graduation parties, whatever it may be I’ll probably forget it. Plan.fm is a brand-spankin’ new app just released this year, so following it’s progress may not be a bad idea.

Kevin Rose’s Failed Microblogging Platform: Where Pownce went Wrong

When Pownce first launched in the summer of 2007, I thought it would revolutionize how I communicated and shared stuff with my friends! By the way Kevin Rose had hyped it, you could share any type of file (music, video, .zip archive), share notes, share photos, really anything you wanted to with your friends! This was an application that was desperately needed on the web, and to this day I still claim there needs to be something to fill the void.

There were, however, many problems with Pownce which lead to it’s downfall. I can’t knock the team at all – they really tried their best to launch the site and create a popular social networking and communication space. But in the real world, website’s of that magnitude cost real-world money… something Pownce wasn’t making enough of.
